As we continue to celebrate Kool G Rap’s birthday today, here’s one from the vaults. A great feature story on KGR that was in XXL Magazine back in 2001. Written by Datwon Thomas. Continue reading →
One thing I loved about doing artists interviews during my time at XXL, you never knew where you would have to travel to conduct the interview. In this interview with Kay Slay for the Ill Techniques column, I trooped uptown to his apartment which was over a chinese restaurant. Dude had mad records, cassettes, CDs and DJ equipment lining his crib leaving no question what he did for a living. It was my very first encounter with Slay and he’s a very entertaining guy to say the least. Mr. Slap Your Favorite DJ stirred up the drink a few times telling me a few of his stories. We even kicked it after the interview was over about random industry shit and he dropped a few jewels about the mixtape game. Back then I was trying to get my own mixtapes off, so I took heed to his words. Peep game.
If you didn’t happen to be at Summer Jam in 2001, this was one of those, “I remember where I was/what I was doing moments” when the word of Jay Z’s exploits got out.
One of the better Show & Prove calls in XXL Mag. Fabolous Sport was known for killing those DJ Clue tapes back then. Article was written by the homie Datwon Thomas (you’ve come a long way kid!).
